Reports: City linked with possible Benzema swoop

City linked with possible Benzema swoop

Transfer rumours continue to rumble, as title favourites Manchester City have been linked with a possible move for Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema.

According to Manchester Evening News, amongst other reputable sources, Manchester City are currently monitoring Karim Benzema‘s situation at La Liga giants Real Madrid – ahead of a possible swoop for the Frenchman’s signature.

Newspapers in Spain have hinted that Benzema could be angling for a switch to the Premier League, with this news breaking just months after Arsenal‘s well-documented approach for the striker was quashed by the player himself.

Seeming lack of support for Karim

Despite this though, the forward – who turned 28 yesterday – is rumoured to be unsettled in Madrid, over a reported lack of backing by the club during the ongoing sex tape scandal, from which he could possibly face criminal changes if found guilty.

Arsenal are still interested in his services, as well as their London rivals Chelsea – and both could make a move next summer if he is proven not guilty. Having struggled with a thigh muscle strain, which kept him out of action for 65 days thus far this term, he has still managed to net 12 goals in all competitions – having played 14 games in Spain and Champions League group stages to date.

Would he make the move?

A proven goalscorer at the highest level, Benzema penned a new contract extension last summer – meaning his current deal expires in 2019. Despite his world-class talent, and the ability to change games within an instant, many have hinted that he would be open to a new challenge away from Spain.

Having been at the club since a big-money switch from Lyon in July of 2009, he’s one of the longest-serving players and has consistently proven his worth in Europe, which is why plenty of other sides have been constantly monitoring his progress to see whether he’s available.

Wilfried Bony is seen as the club’s second-choice striker behind Sergio Agüero, and with the talented Argentine’s injury worries always a sensitive spot for City supporters, Benzema’s arrival would certainly bolster their attacking options as they aim to cement themselves as Europe’s elite heavyweight in the not-too-distant future.
