Manchester United 3-2 Arsenal: Gunners disappoint in important away clash at Old Trafford

Manchester United 3-2 Arsenal: Gunners disappoint in important away clash at Old Trafford

A first-half brace courtesy of first-team debutant Marcus Rashford – as well as a deflected strike from Ander Herrera was enough to see United past their old foes once again, in a game that promised much more.

Gunners underwhelm as United take full advantage

Arsenal succumbed to defeat for the second time in a matter of days during a five-goal thriller at Old Trafford, despite the hosts clearly fielding a weakened side due to an unhealthy plethora of injuries to key first-team players.

Marcus Rashford – who scored two on his senior debut in midweek – doubled up with his first Premier League brace, against one of the league’s best goalkeepers in Petr Cech.

Arsenal 2-1 Leicester City: Welbeck scores dramatic winner to close gap at summit

Arsenal 2-1 Leicester City: Welbeck scores dramatic winner to close gap at summit

This afternoon, Arsenal managed something no other side have done this term – beat Leicester in both home and away fixtures. Second-half strikes from the substitute duo of Theo Walcott and the returning Danny Welbeck helped seall all three points in what was a must-win game for the hosts.

Arsenal took significant steps towards the Premier League summit, with a late, dramatic 2-1 victory over current leaders Leicester City. The travelling Foxes, who’ve been in impressive form throughout the campaign thus far, conceded two second-half strikes courtesy of Theo Walcott and Danny Welbeck – both of whom were on the substitutes’ bench – and are now only two points clear at the top with twelve games left to play.

An intriguing, fast-paced start

It was clear that, despite the early 12pm kick-off, both sides were raring to start and eager to prove their respective title credentials at the Emirates – buoyed by two sets of supporters who’ve been in contrasting voices all season. Arsenal were tipped as favourites to lift the trophy in May, for the first time in over a decade, whilst Leicester don’t have the pedigree, nor the experience, attached to a ‘title-winning squad’, especially as they narrowly avoided relegation last term.

A first-half quick-fire double from Mesut Özil and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was enough to seal a much-needed three points in a tough away fixture at Dean Court this afternoon.

It was far from a vintage Arsenal away display, but two goals in quick succession were enough to see Arséne Wenger‘s side through in a tough battle against Bournemouth at Dean Court.

Chelsea complete £3.5m signing of Red Bulls defender Matt Miazga

The Blues took to their official club website to announce a winter acquisition – a talented young American centre-back, hoping to embrace the step-up in quality.

Matt Miazga has today officially joined the Premier League‘s reigning champions Chelsea, for a reported fee of £3.5million pounds – according to talkSPORT.

The talented 20-year-old defender, who flourished in the MLS with the New York Red Bulls, has been a keen admirer of European football for quite some time and his consistent displays helped him emerge as a rising talent in America – following his debut across the Atlantic shortly after his 18th birthday.

Miazga delighted to have completed switch

The Polish-American, who has joined on a four-and-a-half year deal, said he is “very happy” to have joined a “world-famous club” in the “best league in the world”.

He was also frank in the way he spoke about his youth, describing himself as someone still “at the beginning” of their career, but feels as though the Premier League is “the place to develop”, where he’ll learn from some of the world’s best players.

Arsenal 0-1 Chelsea: Costa sinks Gunners after Mertesacker’s costly dismissal

Arsenal 0-1 Chelsea: Costa sinks Gunners after Mertesacker's costly dismissal

Arsenal missed the opportunity to return to the top of the Premier League – with Diego Costa netting the only goal of the game after Per Mertesacker’s costly dismissal in the first-half.

Arsenal, oh Arsenal. Arséne Wenger‘s side had the perfect opportunity to leapfrog their rivals back to the summit of the Premier League this evening – but instead, are left scratching their heads at what could’ve been.

Something that typifies their respective title charges of recent seasons, and how they’ve failed to sustain a proper challenge since last lifting the title itself, a decade ago.

Costa haunts Gunners once more

Diego Costa, who passed a late fitness test to start today, broke the deadlock with a well-taken strike at the near post in the 23rd minute, after intelligent movement allowed the Spaniard to weave past three Arsenal markers and fire home from Branislav Ivanovic‘s delivery in the area.

Arsenal vs Chelsea preview: Must-win fixture for Gunners against London rivals

Arsenal - Chelsea preview: Must-win fixture for Gunners against London rivals

Despite the visitors’ faltering form in the Premier League this season, the Gunners will know to avoid underestimating them – it’s a must-win fixture for Arsenal regardless of which Chelsea side turns up at the Emirates.

Arsenal have a golden opportunity to regain top spot in the Premier League tomorrow afternoon, but face an old rival in the form of last season’s champions, Chelsea. After Leicester‘s impressive display at home against Stoke, and Manchester City‘s enthralling draw at Upton Park, the Gunners sit in third after Saturday’s results.

They’ll be eager to record only their second victory over the Blues since their unpredictable 5-3 win at Stamford Bridge back in the 2011/12 campaign, where Robin van Persie fired Arséne Wenger‘s side to a thrilling three points away from home.

West Ham 2-2 Manchester City: Agüero to the rescue for travelling sky Blues

West Ham 2-2 Manchester City: Agüero to the rescue for travelling sky Blues

Manuel Pellegrini’s side snatched a point late on against a spirited Hammers side, courtesy of Sergio Agüero’s brace – his second in successive games.

Sergio Agüero sealed a hard-fought point for Manchester City in their final visit to West Ham‘s Upton Park – in the dying embers of the fixture. The talented Argentine, who has been plagued with frequent injuries in recent months, has now scored six goals and created three assists in all competitions since the start of 2016, as he gradually returns to full match fitness.

After their 2-1 away victory at the Ethiad, Slaven Bilic‘s side were equally bullish about their chances of another win in this meeting too.

Hammers start fast, and are rewarded

Enner Valencia broke the deadlock within a minute – after a driving run forward into the area by Cheikhou Kouyate, brushing past Yaya Touré as though the powerful Ivorian was not even there.

Watford 2-1 Newcastle United: Hornets end losing streak despite nervy finish

Watford 2-1 Newcastle United: Hornets end losing streak despite nervy finish

Goals from Odion Ighalo and Craig Cathcart helped seal a much-deserved victory for the Hornets, despite a nervy finish in the final twenty minutes – courtesy of Jamaal Lascelles’ first goal for the visitors since his summer move.

Watford went in search of their first Premier League victory in six games, as they hosted a tricky Newcastle side – who themselves are eager to maintain a run in order to avoid the relegation dog-fight they’ve been predicted to languish amongst for the rest of the current campaign.

After narrow defeats against Manchester City and Tottenham, Quique Sánchez Flores‘ men also succumbed to away losses against Southampton and Swansea in quick succession – with many critics suggesting that their bubble had seemingly burst, and they were destined for a mid-table finish.

Stoke City 0-0 Arsenal: Sides share points in hard-fought draw

Stoke City 0-0 Arsenal: Sides share points in hard-fought draw

The visitors were held to a hard-fought draw against tough opposition – courtesy of excellent goalkeeping from both sides of the pitch.

It was the tale of two top quality goalkeepers as Jack Butland and Petr Cech did well when called upon to earn hard-fought clean sheets at the Britannia.

The visitors started well, but always knew it’d be a tough test to break down Stoke’s robust defence. With the likes of Ryan Shawcross and Phillip Wollscheid marshaling the backline, Arséne Wenger‘s men looked to play through their opponents – easier said than done.
