On what was supposed to be a showcase night for Oscar de la Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions kicking off 2024, we saw one new signee flattened inside a round in the co-main event before veteran referee Tony Weeks produced another controversial early main event stoppage – this time souring Vergil Ortiz Jr’s long-awaited return against overmatched opponent Frederick Lawson.

Primed for a welterweight world title shot, Vergil Ortiz Jr was searching for answers after a prolonged health scare saw him withdraw on multiple occasions from career-altering bouts. A rhabdomyolysis diagnosis wasn’t heeded but eventually, he came to the conclusion 147lbs wasn’t a sustainable weight cut any longer – so now it’s onwards to the light-middleweight division. This week has revolved around what’s next for Devin Haney – Gervonta Davis, Ryan Garcia and more outlandish names besides – after logging a dominant decision win over defending champion Regis Prograis. Whether it’s been about his 165lb in-ring weight or the fight purse he should expect going forward, it’s easy to forget the individual showing itself. A week on, here is exactly that. Now the dust has settled, Rolando Romero (14-1, 12 KOs) is thankfully in more of a reflective mood than the one adamant he deserved an immediate Gervonta Davis rematch. The 26-year-old, who fared well before that fateful R6 TKO defeat, is now eyeing big fights with the rest of those headlining the lightweight division: Devin Haney, George Kambosos Jr and Ryan Garcia.

He was distracted at times, animated in other moments and began this bout slowly but was importantly methodical with punch selection as Gervonta Davis abruptly ended an encouraging Rolando Romero display deep into round six, making the third defence of his WBA (Regular) lightweight title in-front of an arena-record 18,970 spectators at Barclays Center.
Gervonta Davis improved to 26-0 and retained his WBA (Regular) lightweight belt via UD (116-112, 115-113, 115-113), but the judges’ scorecards show Sunday night’s PPV headliner from Staples Center wasn’t without difficulty against the commendable resolve of Isaac Cruz – living up to his Pitbull nickname while snapping Tank’s 16-fight stoppage streak in the process.
